Director Judd Apatow digs into the question of what makes charismatically desperate comedians do what they do, and this film is also Apatow's attempt to reconcile the huge success he has become with the up-and-comer he once was. When a comic turned movie star (Adam Sandler) is diagnosed with leukemia, he must change his ways and reconnect with those he's sealed off from his life. His new assistant (Seth Rogen) acts as his apprentice, sounding board and punching bag. "Funny People" is 50 percent good and 50 percent close.

Sad really, but this change-up from comedy king Judd Apatow is a slog. Even Adam Sandler can't save it. "Funny People" was supposed to be Judd Apatow's coming out party. The movie in which "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" and "Knocked Up" writer-director, who has long made his bread and butter on the back of immature guys and their raunchy talk, shows his grown-up side. ¶ An adult Apatow would be a significant development since so much recent and future comedy rests under the shade of his very big umbrella -- the mostly super "Superbad," the superbad "Year One" and the somewhat bad "Pineapple Express" among them. ¶ But growing up is not easy and it's clear that the filmmaker remains very conflicted when it comes to adulthood. It's as if he can't quite shed the clown suit for the Armani, and he's definitely not ready to let go of the big red nose, or in Apatow's case, a very specific part of the male anatomy that the film spends far too many of its 2 hours and 26 minutes -- and no, that's not a joke -- on. ¶ The funny thing about "Funny People" is that it is neither funny nor sad, this despite headlining funny guys Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen, featuring cameos and supporting work from roughly 20 other card carrying comedians, and a plot line that centers on a near-death experience. ©2009, calendarlive.com

Advance buzz had tagged Funny People as Judd Apatow's "cancer comedy." Actually, it's leukemia that's putting the squeeze on George Simmons, the jerk-off star of dumb family movies and raunchy stand-up. Adam Sandler, relaxed, focused, alert to nuance, plays George, and it's his best performance ever (right up there with Punch-Drunk Love). Forget tear-jerking. Apatow writes with warmth and wit, but he's no soft touch. He knows George can be a cruel bastard, impossible to live with, but the fucker is funny. Jokes have always been his weapons of choice. The same goes for Apatow. This is only his third film as a director, following The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up, but his influence is so pervasive that he's credited or blamed for every bromance on the market. "Funny People" (R, 1546 minutes). This is a different Adam Sandler, deeper, more thoughtful, in a comedy with thoughtful undertones about a show biz superstar told he has weeks to live. Writer-director Judd Apatow joins him with fine supporting work by Seth Rogen and Leslie Mann, avoids more than a few obvious clichés, and deals not just with mortality but with the cutthroat world of stand-up comedians.
