Filmmakers try to follow up the huge success of The Da Vinci Code by bringing Dan Brown's other hit novel to the big screen. Tom Hanks is back as Robert Langdon and once again has a historical mystery he must solve. This time around there are more lives on the line and he's working against the clock. How could all the pieces of the first film return for this one and yet be classified as mediocre at best?

On the heels of the 2006 adaptation of Dan Brown's best-seller "The Da Vinci Code," Tom Hanks returns to the dullest role of his career, once again under the direction of Ron Howard, who takes the material as seriously as a kidney stone on the way out. "Angels & Demons" is the same sort of lumbering mediocrity that "Da Vinci Code" was. It's more violent, which is something, I guess, and its narrative structure ensures a regular string of cliffhangers. But what turns the pages in print doesn't necessarily propel a story onscreen.

Prof. Tom Hanks is back on the trail again, racing through Rome against a ticking time bomb to save four kidnapped cardinals and reach a vial of anti-matter that could vaporize the Vatican. Meanwhile, intrigue within the College of Cardinals and evidence the previous Pope was murdered. This kind of thriller requires us to accept the preposterous, and if we do, it promises to entertain. To say that the film version of Dan Brown's bestselling Angels & Demons is better than the static anti-cinema that was The Da Vinci Code is like saying oral surgery is better with Novocain. Director Ron Howard eases off on the pain this time by speeding up the pace, toning down the exposition and lighting a fire under the actors. But the movie is still, in the words that star Tom Hanks applied to 2006's Da Vinci Code, "loaded with all sorts of hooey." (Watch Peter Travers' video review of Angels and Demons) Hanks is back as Harvard prof Robert Langdon, but this time minus the funny haircut. He is again forced to mouth the Brown techno-blather.
