Jacques Offenbach
Les Contes d’Hoffmann
Saturday, December 19, 2009 (1 PM ET / 10 AM PT)
Expected Running time: 4 hours, 10 minutes. 2 intermissions
The Ultimate Stage Spectacle - The Met: Live in HD on movie theatre screens nationally. The broadcast of Offenbach’s opera Les Contes d’Hoffmann will be presented live for only one day on Saturday, December 19, 2009 at 1 PM ET / 10 AM PT in select movie theatres.
Tony Award winner Bartlett Sher (South Pacific) directs this new production, returning after the triumph of his Met Barber of Seville (seen live in HD in the 2006–07 season). Offenbach’s fictionalized take on the life and loves of the German Romantic writer E.T.A. Hoffmann is a fascinating psychological journey. Met Music Director James Levine conducts Joseph Calleja in the tour-de-force title role and a stellar star cast including Anna Netrebko as the tragic Antonia, Elina Garanca as the ambiguous Nicklausse, and Alan Held as the demonic four villains.
An encore presentation of this performance will be exhibited in select movie theatres on Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at 6:30 PM in all time zones.
